KOONDROOK Primary School will remain closed until Thursday, after authorities ordered its closure when a tree fell on Sunday.
Students stayed home yesterday, but will attend school in Kerang today and tomorrow.
At least one other tree was deemed at risk of falling because of the high river and saturated banks, and had to be removed before the school could reopen.
The Murray River at Koondrook has been peaking at 6.08 metres since Friday.
The Loddon River peaked in Benjeroop at a height of 2.5 metres on Saturday and had fallen to 2.45 metres yesterday morning.
Several breaches in flood banks were quickly repaired last week, minimising their impact.
Flood warden Lindsay Schultz said the management of this flooding event stood in stark contrast to 2011.
“This time around it has been a very well co-ordinated event by the Incident Control Centre, Gannawarra Shire Council, Goulburn-Murray Water and the flood wardens,” he said.
Floodwater is moving toward the Murray River via the Little Murray River, with flooding of the Loddon Floodway at Pental Island, which isn’t expected to have significant impacts on private property.
Meanwhile, an evacuation order has been issued for Moulamein residents living within the ring levee that protects the town from the Billabong Creek and Edward River.
An evacuation warning was issued on Friday night, and upgraded to an order at 5.15pm on Saturday afternoon following a community meeting.
The New South Wales SES said an engineering inspection and assessment of the Moulamein levee systems had identified structural deficiencies and there was a possibility the systems would fail.
Evacuees have been ordered to attend the Council Business Centre in Moulamein to register their evacuation before leaving.
People were directed to stay with family or friends, or make other accommodation arrangements where possible. An evacuation centre is operating at the basketball stadium in Deniliquin.
Teams of SES volunteers have been sandbagging in Moulamein, where the Edward River is expected to peak around 5.80 metres on Thursday – one of the highest levels on record.
