Getting together was a winner

THE “race that stops the nation” provided an opportunity for socialising before watching the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

More than 20 people spent the morning at the Kerang Bowling Club playing social games before retiring to watch the race.

A smaller crowd attended the Kerang and District University of the Third Age’s Melbourne Cup afternoon tea.

“Our Melbourne Cup Day celebrations fits in with our philosophy of getting everyone together and learn something new,” U3A president, Rex Bradley said.

Meanwhile, cold drinks, fine food, spectacular fashions and 20-cent sweeps all contributed to a glorious Melbourne Cup Day for W.D. Thomas Activity Centre members.

More than 20 members – including some from the Quambatook Planned Activity Group – gathered at the centre for the annual celebration.

Dot Bott named lady of the day, Connie Hein was adjudged best dressed woman, while John Sayers was the best dressed man. Best hat went to Joan Capstick, Heather Burdon won the prize for brightest outfit and Sharon Frankling’s outfit was named best smart casual.
