Hawks swoop starts

EFFORTS to get the Wakool Football Netball Club back on the football field are progressing, with new recruits for the 2017 season confirmed.

The Hawks did not field a side in the 2016 Golden Rivers Football League competition due to a lack of senior footballers.

A number of club members have spent the past three months working behind the scenes to get enough players for open age competitions, working alongside new coach, Stephen Arthur.

“The people of Wakool are looking forward to the club getting back on the field,” he said.

“The club’s annual meeting is on November 22, and we have between then and December 5, when the league’s annual meeting is, to state we are ready to return.

“We also need to convince the league we have a viable future.”

The club has secured the services of Cohuna Kangas midfielders Ben Edwards and Dylan Friedberger, as well as Jamie Townsend from Dunolly and former Hawk Daniel Green, who spent the past three seasons at Elmore.

Former Balranald player Louis Clarke and Dylan Friedberger’s brother, Anthony – who played with Pyramid Hill in 2016 – will also wear the brown and gold, adding to the large number of Hawks players from 2015 who have signed on for next season.

“We’ve focused on getting players who live nearby who do not have to travel far to play,” Arthur said.

“Most of them have young families, and we need to get families to come to Wakool to play.

“We still have plenty of irons in the fire (in relation to other recruits).”
