Pause to remember wartime sacrifice

CITIZENS are urged to pause on Friday to remember the supreme sacrifices made so many in armed conflicts so that we could live in peace.

Remembrance Day services will be held on Friday to mark the 98th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18).

Armistice Day was later renamed Remebrance Day.Residents will observe one minute’s silence at 11am – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

First held on November 11, 1919 after King George V called for all countries across the British Commonwealth to observe two minutes of silence to honour the lives of those killed during World War One, Remembrance Day now honours the lives of all killed serving Australia.

The Cohuna/Leitchville sub-branch of the Returned and Services League will hold its memorial service at Cohuna’s Garden Park.

The Kerang and District RSL sub-branch’s commemorations beginning at 10.50am at the Atkinson Park Cenotaph.

War veteran Max Molloy has been speaking to students at the school about commemorating war and peace.RSL officials are selling poppies and other merchandise, with all proceeds going to support local servicemen and women.

A tribute to World War One soldiers will be unveiled at Kerang Cemetery at 6pm on Friday.

The ceremony will be held at the Lone Pine memorial in the cemetery precinct.
