New club for adult riders

EQUESTRIAN enthusiasts have flocked to a new adult riding club.

The Northern Rivers Equestrian Club, which is affiliated with the Horse Riding Club Association of Victoria, held its first rally in Kerang last Saturday.

The club already has more than 30 members, mainly from the Kerang and Swan Hill districts but from as far afield as Balranald, Nullawil and Tullakool.

The club was formed by Emma Mikkelsen and Lisa Muirhead – keen riders who both work together at Kerang business.

“We were talking about how there wasn’t anything local and no opportunity to meet other horsey people so we decided to form a club,” said Mikkelsen, who is the club’s inaugural president.

While there are several pony clubs in the district, Mikkelsen said there was no local option for adult riders, meaning riders either didn’t compete or travelled long distances to other clubs.

“There was a definite lack of activities available for adults to compete in English equestrian disciplines in the area,” she said.

Rallies will be held on the second weekend of each month, alternating between the Swan Hill and Kerang Pony Club grounds.

Experienced instructors will attend each rally to provide coaching on a vast array of disciplines.

“We’re really wanted to make the club all-inclusive so it suits anyone with an interest in riding horses,” Mikkelsen said.

“We have people interested in English disciplines, as well as western and stock horse disciplines, so it will be very varied.

“People will be able to pick and choose what they come to depending on the instructor we have, so it is really flexible.”

The next rally will be held at the Swan Hill Pony Club grounds on Saturday, December 10.
