THE Lake Meran Public Purposes Committee has been the victim of a “ridiculously petty” crime.
Days after a massive clean-up to remove thousands of dead fish from the foreshore, the committee discovered on Sunday that someone had broken into one of two donation boxes at the lake by jimmying a lock.
Committee treasurer, Ron Kelly said the boxes were checked almost every day, so the result of the senseless crime would have been only a few dollars.
“It’s a ridiculously petty thing to have done,” he said.
The committee relies wholly on donations to cover rubbish removal, cleaning and other maintenance costs, which total more than $5000 annually.
A new initiative was launched this year encouraging people to pay a membership fee to use the lake.
Mr Kelly encouraged people to make use of the committee’s direct debit facility, which he said had been well supported over the Summer period.
The lake’s next influx of visitors is scheduled for the Sounds of Meran on Australia Day.
