Wiring youth connections

BEING connected. That is one of the key elements emanating from the initial consultations among 11 young local residents spearheading a virtual youth project to provide a link for youths across the Shire of Gannawarra.

The group was chosen as Wired to the Warra interns for five days of discussions to formulate the shape of the virtual space for young people across the shire.

Gannawarra Youth Council member, Harry Lodge said that the council, comprising students from district secondary schools, initially wanted a physical youth centre, a place where young people could gather.

“We visited youth centres in Bendigo; then couldn’t find a good spot, either in Kerang or Cohuna, then we realised that with multiple towns, it wouldn’t work.

“People wouldn’t be able to travel from one place to another, then we thought of a roving youth centre.

“The website idea came up, so we decided to try and get some funding.”

Gannawarra Shire Council received a VicHealth Bright Futures grant to support young people to develop a project that connects councils, communities and young people.

Titled ‘Wired in the Warra’, the new pilot program has received funding for 12 months.

The aim is to create a virtual space, creating access to information and connection for young people.

The 11 selected interns met twice last week with consultants Gavin Krasner from business development firm Chops For Tea and Step Forbes from GreenGraphics.

Cohuna intern, Josh Nicholson said that he became involved because he was keen to persue a career in computerisation.

Guy Miller said that the brain-storming amongst the group had broadened a number of ideas and Cheyenne Freeman, from Kerang, said that a virtual youth space embracing people across the vast shire was important.

“Staying in touch is important and it helps develop healthy relationships and support networks,” she said.

Andrew Buchanan, of Barham, said that such a facility would enable young people to access support when needed.

Three more developmental sessions are scheduled this week.
