Sale attracts bargain hunters

GROUPS of voracious shoppers roved the streets of Cohuna in search of a bargain on Saturday.

The annual Cohuna Town Garage Sale featured 45 homes and an endless list of great buys, from household goods and clothes to tools and machinery.

The event is an opportunity for people to have a good clean-out and make a few dollars, while for others it is the chance to pick up reasonably priced goods.

The Cohuna Neighbourhood House organised the event, and volunteer Denise Waterson said it was remarkable how many people were visiting from neighbouring towns and more far-flung destinations like Traralgon and Ballarat.

“A lot of people have come from out of town and made a weekend of it, which is great for the town,” she said.

Railway Avenue was a particularly popular destination, with a cluster of sales in close proximity attracting plenty of shoppers.

Jeff and Margaret Reade had banded together with their daughter, Joanne Luehman from Berriwillock, to host a sale, which had proven immensely popular.

“We had people knocking at the door at a quarter to seven,” Mrs Reade said.

“We’ve had people calling in from all over Victoria and we’ve sold plenty; it’s a great opportunity to clean out the cupboards.”

On the other side of the street, the Richardson and Anderson families were also having a collaborative sale.

“We’ve sold a lot of camping equipment and old workshop machinery,” Karen Richardson said.

“As they say, one person’s trash is another’s treasure.”

Ms Richardson said the town garage sale format was a great initiative by the neighbourhood house.

“I have a sale every year and it’s always very successful,” she said.
