KERANG and the Mallee Eagles are well represented in the Central Murray Football Netball League’s AFL Victoria Community Championship squad.
The league announced its 56-player squad on Monday, which will be cut to 22 prior to Saturday, May 13’s match against Heathcote and District at Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth Oval.
Kerang premiership coach, Troy Coates – who guided the 2016 squad to victory in last year’s championship encounter against North Central – will oversee the league’s side, with fellow club coaches Neil Bradley (Koondrook/Barham), Dean Helmers (Mallee Eagles) and Ash Thompson (Nyah-Nyah West United) to provide assistance.
Coates is one of nine Blues players in the squad, joining premiership teammates Jesse Clark, Troy Davis, Ryan Gillingham, Brandon Hayes, Martin Kelly, Travis Matheson and Bradlee Pay.
New Kerang recruit, Patrick Taban is also part of the side, despite not having played a game in the competition.
The Mallee Eagles also have nine representatives in the squad, headlined by Boden Alexander, Beau Bennett, Braidon Bennett and Helmers.
Cohuna Kangas’ coach, Scott Beattie is one of six Kangas eligible to represent the league, joining Rhys Bradley, Jack Dehne, Clayton Holmes, Harrison Keely, Regan Williams.
New recruit, Dean Limbach leads Koondrook/Barham’s contingent, which includes Marc O’Neill and Troy Rogers.
Last season’s grand finalists, Nyah-Nyah West United has three players in the squad, whilst Tim Mosquito, who won the Northern Territory Football League’s Nichols Medal earlier this month, is one of six Woorinen players eligible for selection.
The championship match – involving Victoria’s 19th and 20th-ranked leagues – will begin at 1.30pm, and will be a curtain raiser to the game between the Bendigo and Ballarat leagues.
It will also be the only match between both sides, with Heathcote District declining to field an under 18 football team or offer netball sides for the one-off match.
