Bowlers roll for New Year event

A FLEDGLING community event is set to roll on this New Year’s Eve thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Kerang Bowling Club.

The club added an extra night to its social bowls program in support of the Kerang Progress Association, which stages the Party in the Park on New Year’s Eve.

The event was held on March 16, with 112 bowlers helping to raise $2685, with $1400 coming from the club’s proceeds and the balance from a raffle conducted on the night by the Progress Association.

With approximately $10,000 required to run the free New Year’s Eve celebration, association president Kelvin Burt said the bowling club’s contribution was invaluable.

“The Kerang Bowling Club has provided a great start to the annual fundraising effort and the Progress Association is most grateful and appreciative of the club’s support,” he said.

Free entertainment at the third edition of the Party in the Park will include musical entertainment, fireworks, a jumping castle, train rides and face painting.

Mr Burt said the event also helped to boost the coffers of other community groups.

“Many local volunteer organisations such as the SES, Guides, Scouts, Pony Club, Rotary, Chaplaincy, Lions and Car Club provide entertainment and food – activities which support their clubs,” he said.

The next major fundraiser for the event will be a concert by Marty Worrall and Pete Williamson at the Kerang Memorial Hall on April 22.

Donation tins will also be placed in local businesses soon.

Bowling club representative, Ian Roberts urged other groups to consider hosting fundraising events.

“It would be great if other local clubs could offer their support because it’s a really good way to raise money,” he said
