Sheen shows through rain

A LATE change of venue did no harm to the second annual Kerang Show and Shine, held at Atkinson Park on Sunday.

Heavy rain on Thursday and Friday left organisers scrambling to relocate the event from Alexandra Park.

Kerang Progress Association president, Kelvin Burt said the shift could become permanent, with crowd numbers boosted by stopping highway traffic.

“There were a few little extras we had to leave out because of the change of venue, but otherwise it’s worked very well,” he said.

We’re absolutely rapt with the amount of vehicles and number of people in attendance.”

The event is organised by the association together with the Kerang and District Vintage Motor Club and Kerang and District Agricultural Society.

All proceeds from the day will go toward the construction of a multi-purpose recreation pavilion at Alexandra Park.

It is estimated the new building, which will include a kitchen, will cost $1 million to build and furnish.

Agricultural society member, John Poole said car owners had travelled from far and wide to be involved in the event, with 90 vehicles entered into 11 classes of competition, while an additional 200 vehicles were on display.

“We have lots of visitors and the locals have supported us exceptionally well by bringing as many cars as possibly,” he said.

“I don’t think we could have wished for anything more under the circumstances.”

Geoff Windridge and Bill Watters from the Veteran, Vintage and Classic Club of Bendigo were called upon to serve as independent judges.

“It’s an absolutely marvellous line-up of cars and 90 per cent deserve first prize so it’s been very hard to pick,” Mr Windridge said.
