Walking to beat cancer scurge

COHUNA district residents have added their support to a national effort aiming to raise $4 million for breast cancer research. 

Close to 50 walkers and runners of all ages took part in the Cohuna Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday, setting out from Garden Park and traversing the Recreation Reserve. 

The event was organised by the Cohuna Secondary College Student Representative Council, with support from the Cohuna Neighbourhood House, Lions Club and Leo Club. 

SRC member Emmalea Wishart led a minute of silence for breast cancer sufferers prior to the commencement of the event.

“We’re all here today for different reasons – to pay tribute to our mums, to remember a loved one who has passed away from breast cancer, or to offer our support to those who are currently undergoing treatment,” she said.

“But most importantly, we are here to help the National Breast Cancer Foundation work towards their goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. This is especially close to my heart, and I thank you for being here.”

The Cohuna event raised hundreds of dollars for the foundation through entry fees and donations.

“This money will allow researchers to investigate how to better detect, treat and prevent the disease,” Miss Wishart said.

“Breast cancer remains one of the most commonly occurring cancers in Australian women, with one in eight women developing breast cancer in their lifetime.”
