NULLAWIL has moved into a three-way battle with Wandella and Hay for second spot on the Golden Rivers Football League ladder following an 18-point win against the Bombers on Saturday.
Little separated the sides during the opening half at Wandella, with the hosts holding a three-point lead at quarter time and a four-point advantage at the main break.
However, the Maroons took control of the game in the second half, with Kal Heslop – who finished with five goals – leading the way.
The Maroons – who were playing the Bombers for the first time since last year’s first semi-final – kicked three goals in the third term to open up an 11-point lead, before both sides combined for a seven-goal shootout in the final quarter.
Andrew Oberdorfer dominated across the half-forward line for the victors, with Jason Cowland and Heslop also named in the top players.
Nullawil will host Macorna when the competition resumes on June 17, with the Bombers to take on defending premiers, Murrabit.
Winning ways continue
ULTIMA is two wins clear at the top of the GRFL ladder following a 41-point win against Quambatook.
The result matches Nullawil’s 7-0 start to the 2013 season – a year that saw Wakool claim the silverware – and is the club’s best run of wins since its efforts between round two, 2014 and round three, 2015.
The ‘Roos took control of the match at Quambatook in the second quarter, kicking seven goals to four to open up a 30-point lead at the main break.
Although being restricted to one goal in the third quarter, the result was wrapped up in the final term, with the Saints kept goalless after three-quarter time.
Ryan Devereux finished with six goals for the ‘Roos, with Dwayne Hamlyn, Kyle Symons and Tom Bull standing out for the victors.
William Barden (three goals) was Quambatook’s only multiple goalkicker, with Ash Davis and Jason Linke playing well for the hosts.
The ‘Roos will host Hay on June 17, with Quambatook to take on Wakool.
Lions stamp authority
HAY showed the competition it is a dangerous side when playing at home, defeating defending premiers, Murrabit by 26 points.
Jackson Ferguson (four goals) and Dean Aylett led the way for the hosts, who were extremely accurate in front of goal, registering 15 goals from 21 scoring shots.
Hay led at every break, with a five-goal to two third term opening the game up when it mattered.
Nathan Henry (three goals), Tom Holdstock and Josh Dwyer were key players for the Blues, who go into the Queen’s Birthday break fifth on the ladder with four wins from seven matches in season 2017.
The win moved Hay to third on the ladder going into a key round nine clash with Ultima, with the Blues to host rivals, Wandella in a match that will shape the finals hopes of both sides.
Swans’ top season
MOULAMEIN is on track to record its best season since 2013.
The Swans’ 158-point win against Wakool – the club’s second victory this season – means the club has matched its 2013 effort of two wins, but will look to build on this record in the second half of the season.
It was a day out for the Swans, with Pat Caldwell (seven goals) and Xavia Elford (six goals) booting more goals individually than what Wakool could manage in the entire game.
The win was the Swans’ biggest victory in more than a decade, with the result the Hawks’ sixth 100-plus point loss of the year.
Moulamein restricted Wakool to one goal in the opening half, with the Hawks managing to kick three goals in the third quarter.
Ethan Saville and Cody Storm were best on ground for the victors, with Joe Thompson and Tyson Webb playing well for the Hawks.
Moulamein will next take to the field on June 24 against Quambatook, with Wakool to host Quambatook on June 17.
