Square works set to start

WORK on the $750,000 facelift of the heart of the Kerang shopping centre will start on Sunday.

The latest stage of the Kerang central business district upgrade will focus on the renewal of Victoria Square and Victoria Street between Wellington and Scoresby Street.

The street works are scheduled to commence on Sunday, June 11 and are expected to take about eight weeks.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times throughout the construction phase, however there will be some disruptions for vehicle traffic with the centre part of Victoria Street closed to all vehicle traffic and some carparks unavailable.

The project is being financed through a $500,000 grant from the Victorian Government and a $250,000 contribution from Gannawarra Shire Council and is part of an overall multi-stage plan to enhance the commercial area and to upgrade linkages from the railway station through the shopping centre to the highway entrance and Atkinson Park.

The Victoria Square plan proposes a number of alterations to the current visual appearance and functionality of Kerang’s primary civic space including:

• Implementation of traffic calming measures on the approach to Victoria Square;

• Creation of a shared zone, within Victoria Square, which effectively gives priority to pedestrians and improves safety;

• Construction of custom timber bench seats;

• Installation of grassed elevated pods and new landscaping;

• Installation of in-ground lighting.
