Nostalgic journey

RAIL enthusiasts enjoyed a touch of nostalgia on Saturday morning as an annual Steamrail Victoria pilgrimage passed through the district.

A small crowd of onlookers welcomed the volunteer rail organisation’s K190 locomotive and 10 adjoining carriages to Kerang during the first breakfast stop of the Northern Weekender tour.

In what is becoming a tradition for the area, those taking part in the three-day expedition to Swan Hill and Echuca enjoyed a cooked breakfast at the Kerang Senior Citizens Rooms, put on the Kerang Progress Association, Rotary Club of Kerang and Kerang Scouts.

Many locals braved the cold conditions to watch the locomotive move onto the Kerang railway station’s secondary line to enable the V/Line Melbourne-bound service to pass by, before returning to the main track for the expedition”s continuation to Swan Hill.

Those lucky enough to gain a ticket for the one-way journey to Swan Hill experienced what it was like to travel through the district via steam power, with others watching on as the locomotive made its way north.

The locomotive passed back through Kerang early Sunday morning on its way to Echuca via Bendigo.
