Vandals impact construction site

VANDALS unleashed their destructive tendencies in Kerang on Saturday night, pushing over part of the security fence that encircles the Victoria Street redevelopment.

The fence is heavily weighted down and to topple it would have required significant force.

The Gannawarra Times reported the incident on its Facebook page on Sunday morning and soon received a flood of comments from people criticising the senseless act of vandalism.

Several people also reported hearing firecrackers set off in the early hours of Sunday morning, while another resident noted that roses had been pulled from planter boxes in the street. It is not known whether the incidents are related.

There were also renewed calls for CCTV in Kerang’s central business area, which has long been on the community’s wish-list and was raised at a Victoria Police forum in the town last year.

While a CCTV system is not in place in Victoria Street, there is the possibility the incident was caught on shop video surveillance and ATM cameras. Several bank ATMs are located along the section of street where the fence was pushed over.
