Crisis averted

LOCAL basketballers will be able to take to the court in the coming months thanks to the strong offer of support from volunteers.

Sixteen people have signed on to be a part of the Kerang Amateur Basketball Association committee following a crisis meeting last week.

The association – which runs competitions for junior and senior players – called for the gathering after a number of key positions were left unfilled following the recent annual general meeting.

Paul Grayling and Trent O’Neill are joint presidents, with former leader, Tara Tuohey to be the association’s vice-president.

“Both Trent and I are of the same thinking. We both have young families and the last thing we wanted to see was the association go into recess,” Grayling said.

“Unfortunately basketball seems to take a back seat to other sports, such as football and cricket, so hopefully we can get the sport back into the public’s interest.”

The new committee – which consists of 12 new people who have not been involved on the board previously – will meet at the end of the month to determine how the 2017/18 season will look.

“We want to keep things on the even keel, but add to the work the previous board has done with some new ideas,” Grayling said.

“We are looking forward to the year and hope to keep the place established.”
