ONE of the area’s longest serving Scout leaders has been recognised for more than 40 years of commitment to the organisation.
Scouts Victoria confirmed on Tuesday that 1st Kerang Scout leader, Mark Wilson will receive a Silver Emu when its Adult Recognition Awards are presented later in the year.
The award honours Mr Wilson’s long-term commitment to the world’s largest youth organisation – a passion that started when he joined as a Cub Scout.
“I’ve been involved in Scouts since I was eight, and I have never left,” he said.
“It is nice to be appreciated, but I only do what I do because I love it.”
During his time with the organisation, Mr Wilson has seen the number of groups operate in Kerang drop from three in the mid-1970s to one, now based at its Boundary Street hall.
“I enjoy being able to see what kids achieve through being Scouts, as well as watching them enjoy themselves being outdoors, rather than sitting at home in front of the computer,” Mr Wilson said.
Meanwhile, 1st/2nd Cohuna Scouts group leader, Stuart Richardson was also honoured during the award announcement, made on the anniversary of the day Scouting was founded.
Mr Richardson, who has been a leader since 2007, will receive the Special Service Award for his commitment to the organisation in Cohuna and district.
“I am a bit chuffed to be receiving the honour, but there are plenty of others who should be recognised,” he said.
The Koroop resident announced in early 2006 plans to retire as a Scout leader, but has remained as the group leader “managing the paperwork behind the scenes”.
“The Scouts are in recess until we can find someone to take being the leader on,” he said.
“We had more Cub Scouts than Scouts, and most of the Scouts that were there were close to 15 years of age and looking at finishing up their time anyway.”
