Studies to end with volunteer work

SIXTEEN Year 12 students will conclude their high school studies with a volunteer work project trip to Cambodia.

Students from Kerang Christian College, Kerang Technical High School, and Cohuna Secondary College will fly to Cambodia at the end of November to spend two weeks working on volunteer projects. This will be the 11th annual alternative schoolies expedition organised by the Rotary Club of Kerang.

The students will spend one week in Siem Reap and one week in Phnom Penh, before returning home.

The students will help with building houses as well as several community outreach projects with groups such as the Tabitha Foundation and the Life and Hope Association. The students will also work on an ongoing permaculture project with a group called Green Gecko, which student groups have been assisting for the last few years.

The trip is sponsored by a grant from the Kerang Agricultural Research Farm as well as local businesses and services, and the students have also been raising their own funds to help fund the project via sausage sizzles and chocolate drives.

The students will be supervised by six leaders, including Rotary Club representative, Gerardine Prendergast.

Students will also get to experience a taste of Cambodian culture during their trip, with visits to Angkor Wat, the market places, and other local sites.
