Bush drive guide

SPENCES Forest Drive CD was launched last Friday at the Gateway to Gannawarra centre.

The CD takes listeners on a self-drive tour through the Gunbower State Forest, starting at Spences Bridge, near Gannawarra, and offers information on the historical and natural features of the region.

Gannawarra shire councilor Lorraine Learmonth launched the CD with community members and described the region as the “Kakadu of Victoria”.

“This is an exciting time – we’re opening up the mysteries of the Gunbower forest to educate tourists and locals, to showcase the beauty of the wildflowers, animals, birds, as well as the history of Gunbower forest,” she said.

The self-drive Spences Bridge Forest Drive CD project received funding from a Gannawarra Shire community grant, and was also supported with generous donations from the Cohuna and District Progress Association, Cohuna and District Historical Society Inc, Friends of Tree Tops, and in-kind support from Forest Fire Management Victoria.

The project was led by a community group of volunteers and was three years in the making.

Group member Di Peace said the project was important because if it is not documented, all of that local history would be lost.

Local Barapa Barapa also supported the project.

The CD is available for purchase from the Gateway to Gannawarra centre in Cohuna, and there are plans to sell it as a USB as well.
