Putting a bite on polio

LOCAL residents did their bit on Sunday to help eradicate polio globally.

More than 30 people gathered at the Rotary Club of Kerang’s headquarters for a roast lunch and to raise funds for Rotary International’s major project.

Now in its third year, the World’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio initiative – developed by Cairns Rotarian, Susanne Rea – is a beneficiary of billionaire couple, Bill and Melinda Gates, who double each individual contribution made to the cause.

“It is amazing to see the efforts of the residents of a small country town to support the project,” Ms Rea – who was a guest speaker at the event – said.

“So far the project has raised nearly $10 million, and it all came about I wanted to do something about it, but did not have the support of my home club.”

Since its inception, the program has focused on eradicating polio in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

“Often on Sunday, people are looking for a meal, so we are so grateful for those who have come along,” Rotary Club of Kerang president, Jenny Kelly said.

“We are so close to eradicating polio globally, and as a club, we are happy to work with Rotary on these, or any other types, of projects.”
