Show’s new approach

AN emphasis on education turning its night session into a showcase will highlight next month’s Kerang and District Agricultural Society Show.

Organisers have changed the show’s traditional two-day program for the October 9 and 10 event following Gannawarra Shire Council’s decision not to grant the Tuesday public holiday status.

A number of events will be moved to ensure specific competitions receive due prominence, whilst a new program will aim to entice people to Alexandra Park on the Tuesday.

“We’re not going to get bogged down with what has happened,” agricultural society president, Geoff Davey said.

The show’s traditional horse and dog categories will occur on the Monday, with new attractions added to the late afternoon and evening events.

Food traders will be moved into a food court area, which will also include the stage where a band will perform and official proceedings will be run.

Judging of the Miss Kerang Show Girl sections – previously a Tuesday afternoon tradition – will occur at 5.30pm on the Monday, with Victorian Agricultural Societies chairman, Jenny Daffy, to open the show at 5.25pm.

Sideshow Alley and its rides will be popular once again, with other attractions – including camel rides, a bucking bull, face painting, laser tag and a whipcracking demonstration – to draw crowds.

The pet show will run from 6.30pm, with the smash-up derby to occur at 8.30pm.

Traditional agricultural show categories – including cattle, poultry and yard dog trials – will begin on the Tuesday morning, with the society incorporating a school education day to entice people to the venue.

More than 400 children will take part in a day of events, with the Country Fire Authority, Victoria Police and State Emergency Service to run demonstrations.

Parks Victoria representatives and Vicky the Truck – which promotes the stories of Victorians and how they contribute to society – will also be in attendance.

“We hope this new approach will work out for us,” Mr Davey said.

Entries for the pavilion section are now being accepted at the show office, located on the Park Road side of Alexandra Park, each weekday leading up to the show between 10am and 4pm.

Details on all events are also available on the Kerang Show Facebook page.
