TOMORROW’S Procal Dairies Gunbower Gold Cup meet will proceed, with ideal conditions for both on-course and off-track action.
It will be the first time since 2015 the meet will occur after above-average rainfall in September 2016 soaked the Gunbower Racecourse to the point that a full race meet would have deteriorated the course.
“I think I’ve had around 100 weather watchers keep me updated with the conditions for the meet, thanks to the history of previous meets,” Gunbower Racing Club president, Mick Farrant said.
“With all the information, I reckon I could give (meteorologist) Jane Bunn a run for her money.”
More than 300 horses were nominated for the initial seven-race field – including 33 for the 1800-metre Procal Dairies Gunbower Gold Cup, with the racing club successful in obtaining an eighth race to cater for the added interest in the meet.
“We’ve had a massive number of nominations, and a number of rides had already accepted their positions as of Wednesday afternoon, which is great,” Farrant said.
Gates will open at 11am, with the first of the races – the Bet365 Maiden Plate – scheduled to jump at 12.57pm.
The Fashions on the Field competitions will be just as competitive as the races themselves, with judging occurring throughout the afternoon.
Children’s categories will occur after race two, with young racegoer sections to be judged after race three.
The popular Lady of the Day will be awarded after race four, with the Matron of the Day to be announced after race five.
Other events which have helped draw record numbers to the meet include musical performances and children’s activities.
“We’ve had to put on extra buses, the online bookings are going over the moon and the marquee numbers are great,” Farrant said.
“It should be a great day out for all of the family.”
