Aiming for State titles

FOUR local golfers will play at Royal Melbourne on Sunday for the chance to take part in the national Play 9 Australian final.

James McLean and Tish Condor won the men’s and ladies sections at last Tuesday’s Northern District Golf Association qualifying final, held at Barham.

McLean, representing Murray Downs, claimed the win with 21 points on count back from Kerang’s Chris Waterson, but the pair will compete alongside fellow regional winners and runners-up at Royal Melbourne.

Condor prevailed on her home course in the ladies section, recording 19 points to edge out Kerang’s Jan Kelly (17). Both players will compete in the Victorian ladies final.

Play 9 is a Golf Victoria and Golf Australia initiative to encourage golfers to encompass the shorter version of the game, being nine holes of competitive play.

Winners and runners-up from the Victorian final will play in the national final, occurring as part of the Australian Open in Sydney.
