Shared culture

PYRAMID Hill has joyously celebrated shared cultures with a community gathering centred on food and entertainment.

An influx of new residents from the Philippines in recent years has given Pyramid Hill a new sense of identity.

The small town has fully embraced its Filipino families and has been open to new cultural and culinary experiences.

The third annual Pyramid Hill Fiesta was the latest opportunity to learn more about the cultural traits of Filipinos.

A variety of both Filipino and Australian food was on offer and a range of Philippines-style entertainment involved both long-term and new residents.

A trio of Filipino dancers were followed by a pageant parade of children and a children’s competition involving talent, deportment and impromptu questions for seven youngsters.

Local councillor, Cheryl McKinnon said that the fiesta enabled both the district community and visitors to experience shared cultures through food and entertainment.

Local politician and Victorian Leader of the Nationals, Peter Walsh said in an opening address that the fiesta was a great event to bring the community together.

“It’s a great thing about Australia, country people with a sense of community, looking out for each other, checking if you’re okay, everyone involved,” he said.

Mr Walsh praised the collective efforts of the town’s progress association, the two schools, the Lions club, fire brigade and football club.

“The Filipinos have contributed to the community in a very real way,” he said.
