CHILDREN at a Kerang school have done their bit to help preserve the district’s native environment.
Kerang Christian College’s junior students recently worked with volunteers to plant 60 native trees along the school’s western border.
The effort formed part of One Tree Per Child program, which aims to get tree planting to be part of the school curriculum, with each child given a tree to plant as part of a school event.
Gannawarra Shire Council signed on to the program – developed by National Tree Day founders Jon Dee and Olivia Newton-John – in late 2015.
“Gannawarra Shire Council contacted us and said it had been successful in applying for funding through the program,” Kerang Landcare Group representative, Angela Hird said.
“As part of the program, we had to link up with a local school and as we are focusing on a number of projects within the Kerang Regional Park, we though Kerang Christian College was the best fit.
“The school has expanded since it last planted native shrubs on its boundary, so we wanted to focus on the northern part of this area.”
Teams of up to five people planted varieties of emu bush and hop bush throughout various locations on the parcel of land between Vaughan and Wyndham streets.
“Taking part in the tree planting is a really good way for the students to be engaged in the community and make a difference,” college business manager,” Meghan Stewart said.
“Hopefully they will also take ownership of the plants as they get older.”
