Schools’ baton route

THREE local schools will play a role in hosting the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton when the relay visits the area in February.

A day of celebrations will occur on Friday, February 16 when the baton, which includes a message from Queen Elizabeth II that will be read out at the Commonwealth Games’ opening ceremony, visits the area.

The baton and a number of bearers will visit Murrabit during the morning, with residents able to line a number of the town’s streets to see the relay occur.

The 53rd day of the Australian leg will begin at Murrabit Group School at 10.59am, before the baton heads along Browning Avenue, Gonn Avenue, Laursen Street, Whiter Street and Danson Street.

Baton bearers will then head south along Gonn Avenue to the entrance of the Murrabit Golf Club, where the baton will be taken by road to Kerang.

The Kerang leg of the relay will begin at St Joseph’s Primary School, before baton bearers head to Kerang Primary School via Burgoyne Street, Murray Street, Wattle Avenue, Nolan Street, Wyndham Street and Victoria Street.

Following a brief stop at Kerang Primary School, the relay will be taken to Atkinson Park via Victoria Street and Wellington Street in readiness for a 1.39pm community celebration.
