CLOSE to 60 competitors from throughout the region took to the Kerang Swimming Pool on December 16 for the chance to qualify for next month’s Victorian Country Championships.
The Kerang Swimming Club hosted its open carnival, attracting participants from as far away as Ballarat, Bendigo, Gisborne, Kyabram, Lilydale and Maryborough.
Fourteen local swimmers took part, with Nyah-Two Bays Swan Hill having the largest contingent with 24 participants.
Strong performances on the day from Kerang club members Maddison McGowan, Samuel McGowan and Tyler Meehan ensured the trio qualified for the country titles, being held in Shepparton.
The next District 14 event is the Nyah-Two Bays Swan Hill Open Meet, occurring on Saturday, January 6, with entries closing on January 1.
Competition will return to the Kerang Swimming Pool on Saturday, February 10 when the venue hosts the twilight sprints.

Emily Bortolotto – Second in 16 to 34-year-old girls 50-metre breaststroke and freestyle; third in open girls 100-metre breaststroke.
Cody Makeham – Second in open boys 50-metre butterfly, third in open boys 50-metre backstroke and breaststroke.
Demby Makeham – Second in open girls 50-metre backstroke and breaststroke.
Ayla McGowan – Third in eight to nine-year-old girls 50-metre butterfly.
Maddison McGowan – First in open girls 50-metre backstroke and 14 and 15-year-old girls 100-metre backstroke; second in mixed 200-metre backstroke; third in open girls 50-metre butterfly, 14 and 15-year-old girls 100-metre butterfly, open girls 50-metre freestyle and 14 and 15-year-old girls 100-metre freestyle.
Sam McGowan – First in 14-year-old and over boys 200-metre individual medley, 16 to 34-year-old boys 50-metre butterfly, open boys 100-metre butterfly, 16 to 34-year-old boys 50-metre backstroke, open boys 100-metre backstroke, 16 to 34-year-old boys 50-metre breaststroke, open boys 100-metre breaststroke, 16 to 34-year-old boys 50-metre freestyle and open boys 100-metre freestyle.
Tyler Meehan – First in 10 and 11-year-old boys 50-metre backstroke; second in 10 and 11-year-old boys 50-metre butterfly and freestyle, as well as second in open boys100-metre backstroke.
Charli Moon – Second in eight and nine-year-old girls 50-metre butterfly.
Jorja Moon – Third in open girls 50-metre backstroke.
Kaylee Shipp – First in 12 to 13-year-old girls 100-metre breaststroke, third in open girls 50-metre breaststroke.
NOTE: Jasmine Bortolotto, Brylee Clingan, Samantha Moon and Ellie Rollinson also competed at the event for Kerang.
