Christmas draw success

KERANG woman, Colleen Shay will have a tough decision to make after winning one of the district’s largest Christmas promotions.

Mrs Shay received a $4000 travel voucher after her entry was drawn out following the completion of the Kerang Traders’ Christmas promotion.

The initiative – which ran from November 1 to last Saturday – encouraged people to shop locally leading up to Christmas, with purchases from four participating outlets resulting in an entry into the draw.

“This has made my year,” Mrs Shay said after finding out she had won.

“I normally don’t win anything.”

More than 8000 of the 13,000 entry forms that were distributed to businesses throughout the town were handed in prior to the draw, with Kerang Traders describing the initiative as a success.

“We would like to thank the community for its support,” the organisation’s interim president, Oscar Aertssen said.

“We held many discussions on how to hold the Christmas initiative and thought we would do something different.”

A large crowd gathered to watch the draw, with a Lions Club of Kerang barbecue and an appearance by Santa Claus adding to the celebrations.

The event was also the first to be held within the rejuvenated Victoria Square precinct, with many taking advantage of the banked grass areas to either watch the draw or take a break from Christmas shopping.

“The idea of having the draw on the Saturday morning rather than at night, when it has been held previously, was also something different,” Mr Aertssen said.
