Heat is on

LOCAL sporting competitions will be affected again by extreme heat tomorrow, with a full round of games yet to be completed so far in 2018.

With the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a maximum temperature of 41 degrees tomorrow, all sporting bodies will be implementing their heat policies – some for the third time this month.

Since the Northern District Bowls Division and Northern District Cricket Association resumed their 2017/18 seasons on January 6, seven out of a possible 20 cricket matches and 20 out of the 42 scheduled lawn bowls encounters have occurred.

The Loddon Valley Tennis Association has fared just as well, with only one round of games proceeding, with January 13’s matches impacted by rain.

The Northern District Lawn Tennis Association also felt the impact of the record-breaking start to 2018, with all matches abandoned last weekend and the prospect of a repeat tomorrow.

Northern District Bowls Division management will move the start time of tomorrow’s matches to 9.30am if the predicted maximum temperature remains above 40 degrees – however, games will be abandoned at venues once the temperature reaches 40 degrees.

The division may also consider abandoning all scheduled matches, as it did last weekend.

The Northern District Cricket Association faces the same prospect, with games to be abandoned if the forecast update later today predicts a maximum temperature of 41 degrees or above for tomorrow.

The Northern District Lawn Tennis Association will use this update to determine whether tomorrow’s games will proceed.

If the Elders website at 6pm today predicts that tomorrow’s maximum temperature is 41 degrees or above, all matches will be cancelled.

However, if the predicted maximum is 40 degrees or lower, games will only proceed if the temperature at 11am tomorrow is 36 degrees or below.

The Loddon Valley Tennis Association will also determine by tomorrow morning whether round 13 games will be held.
