Close finish

ONE of the closest Northern District Bowls Division midweek pennant Division One home and away seasons will finish tomorrow, with all seven sides still in contention to play finals.

Ten points separate third-placed team, Cohuna and seventh-placed side, Barham Services going into round 14.

Current competition leaders, Kerang and Pyramid Hill cannot be dislodged from the top two, with the division’s southernmost side capable of ending the season as minor premiers with a win against Cohuna thanks to Kerang having the bye.

The match of the round will be at Cohuna’s greens, where the defending premiers can secure a first semi-final spot with a win against Pyramid Hill.

However, a loss could see the side fall outside the top four, depending on other results.

Kerang Golf needs to defeat Barham Services on the banks of the Murray River to make their first top-flight finals appearance, with the hosts needing to win and rely on other results to sneak into the first semi-final.

The encounter between seventh-placed Barham Sports and fifth-placed Cohuna Golf will also have ramifications on where teams finish, with the New South Wales-based side capable of making the finals if it wins all three rinks and Kerang Golf suffers a three-rink loss.

Semi-finals will be held on February 7, with the preliminary final scheduled for February 14 and grand final to occur on February 21.

Elimination pressure

THE last Northern District Bowls Division midweek pennant Division Two finals position will be decided tomorrow, with the encounter between fourth-placed side, Barham Services and fifth-placed team, Kerang an elimination final.

Three points separate the teams, with the hosts needing to win to overtake the New South Wales-based team to play in February 7’s first semi-final.

Pyramid Hill can also sneak into the top four, but needs to claim both rinks against competition leaders and two-time defending premiers, Leitchville and hope Kerang wins, but not by a clean sweep.

In the final match of the round, Cohuna will prepare for a second semi-final encounter with Leitchville next week with a final home and away match against Barham Sports..

Cohuna Golf has the bye, but cannot move from third spot on the ladder and a first semi-final berth.
