Riverside Shakespearean treat

KOONDROOK’S Apex Park was turned into a stage of Shakespearean proportions last Friday night when the Essential Theatre Company performed Twelfth Night on the banks of the stunning Murray River.

Almost 200 people turned up to watch the twilight performance, which was the third Shakespeare play the theatre company has held there.

Catering was provided by local businesses, Farm 253 and Burbury and Mathers, who provided dinner hampers for patrons to enjoy throughout the performance.

Volunteer Harry Lodge from the Golden Rivers Theatre Company helped with ushering, light and sound, and general service.

Golden Rivers member Linda van Rensburg said that the group usually volunteers when the Essential Theatre Company comes to town.

“We love it. Every year it seems like they are getting better,” she said.

Gannawarra’s arts and culture group, ACE Club, also came along, with co-ordinator Tanya Black calling it a “brilliant night.”

“ACE Club [members] are really enjoying it. The meal was wholesome [as well],” she said.

Other attendees also had a great night, with many admiring the gorgeous river backdrop as well.

“It’s such a beautiful spot – why wouldn’t you come out?” said Annette Rowe.

Gannawarra Shire Council first booked the theatre group as a way to enliven the wharf after it was developed in 2014.

It went so well that the event has continued since then, and Shakespeare enthusiasts can look forward to next year’s planned performance – A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
