TWENTY-THREE people will have the experience of a lifetime when they step out carrying the Queen’s Baton through Murrabit and Kerang on Friday.
The two communities will also feature in the global spotlight as the baton carrying the Queen’s message continues on its journey to the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
Ten people, including three members of one family, will share the duties at Murrabit and 13 baton-bearers will continue the relay at Kerang, including international netballer, Julie Corletto, who was born at Kerang, and country singer, John Williamson AM, who originated from Quambatook.
A number of district residents from Cohuna, Kerang, Koondrook, Mead, Minmindie and Murrabit have been chosen to carry the baton.
The district’s role in the relay starts with a community celebration at Murrabit Group School at 10.30am, an hour before the relay progresses through the Murray River settlement. A community barbecue will follow at the school.
The Kerang leg will start at St Joseph’s Primary School at 1pm and will proceed to Kerang Primary School for a brief stop before progressing through the shopping centre and on to Atkinson Park.
A community celebration will follow at the park and the swimming pool will be open free of charge for games presented by FreeZa.
