Bridge event future in doubt

THE 25th staging of Cohuna’s iconic Bridge to Bridge events may be the last.

The current committee will retire after the swimming, running, walking, cycling and paddling events conclude on Sunday.

It will be the final series of events on the Gunbower Creek and in the town unless other residents are prepared to step forward to organise future events.

The major event is the 8-kilometre Bridge to Bridge swim from Daltons Bridge to the town bridge, which began as a dare between mates a quarter of a century ago and which has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Cohuna District Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Entries for the events on Sunday are expected to be as high as previous years, but organising committee chairman, Geoff Dale said it’s the end of the road for the current six-member committee.

“The committee has decided not to go on any further, so we’re looking for anybody to take up the role,” he said.

“We’ve been doing it for 25 years and people are just getting a bit old and sick of it,” he said.

Mr Dale said that if nobody takes up the reins, this will be the last year.

But that hasn’t put a damper on next weekend’s events with online entries from Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Participants, whether local or visiting, will make their way to Cohuna for the big day, with the first events starting at 9.30am.

Mr Dale said they were hoping for fine weather, clear water – and for people to register in a timely fashion.

“We’d like people to enter early as they tend to enter late and it makes it really hard on the organisers,” he said.

“It could be the last year so take the opportunity to do it, and if it doesn’t happen next year it’s a good memory,” he said.

Those wishing to register can go to www.bridgetobridge.org.au.

Cohuna District Progress Association will consider future options at its next meeting on March 19 and would welcome input from interested citizens.
