Shared zone scrapped

GANNAWARRA Shire Council has scrapped the shared pedestrian and vehicle zone within Kerang’s central business area.

Signage recognising the 10 kilometre per hour speed limit along the completed Victoria Square precinct was removed recently, more than four weeks after initially being installed.

Council removed the signage after discussions with VicRoads following the completion of the $750,000 project.

“At this meeting it was determined to remove the shared zone signage. This removed any confusion for motorists and pedestrians as to who has right of way and continue with the current known community behaviour, being motorists having the right of way,” council said in a statement.

The changes mean that motorists can travel at a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per hour through the precinct.

“Although pedestrians must give way, drivers must still take care and be aware of the area they are driving through,” council said.

“Council will continue to monitor pedestrian and vehicular movements in and along Victoria Street as the safety of all road users is paramount.”

Police will continue to monitor vehicles driving through the new precinct.

“Just because the road is 50 kilometres per hour does not mean you should drive at that speed,” Acting Sergeant Andrew Neil said.

“We would normally say ‘wipe off five’, but in this case it would be best to wipe off 10 kilometres from your speed.

“There is so much happening in the area, and don’t forget people are usually driving slowly through Victoria Street looking for a park.”

VicRoads has been contacted for comment.
