Show by the creek

TRADITIONAL agricultural attractions and entertainment are hallmarks of the annual Cohuna Show.

One of the district’s few remaining shows will make its 105th annual presentation on Friday and Saturday.

One of the increasingly popular aspects now is the Friday night fireworks over the recreation reserve.

The gates open at 4pm on Friday for sideshow alley rides, plenty of food – including the famed Cohuna Kangas Football Club barbecue – and entertainment on the arena.

The fireworks are scheduled to start at 9.30pm.

Cohuna and District Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Society president, Graeme Peace said that the fireworks display seems to improve every year.

“We pride ourselves on this annual event, making sure we give our patrons the ‘best bang for their buck’,” he said.

There will be an exhibition of Boer goats as a prelude to the Australian Boer Goat Show to be held at the same venue on April 14.

The show girl competition on Friday night includes miss and master tiny tots, miss and master junior and miss midi sections.

There will also be judging for the Rural Ambassador Award for anyone aged 20 and under 30 who is involved in a rural or agricultural-based industry or be associated with a show society or field day. There is also a junior section for 16-19 year-old teenagers.

Horses and cattle will be judged on Saturday.

Dairy cattle breeds sections include Holstein, Jersey, Australian Illawarra, Guernsey and Ayrshire.

Beef breeds include Murray Grey, Hereford, Angus, Charolais and Shorthorn.

Other traditional agricultural show sections include poultry, pigeons, farm and garden produce, cookery, preserves, horticulture, needlework, knitting and crochet, handcraft and art, photography, spinning and weaving and crafts and treasures of the past.
