Rail reminder

VISITORS to Cohuna will be able to learn about the town’s railway line thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers.

The Cohuna and District Historical Society recently installed an information board on Sampson Street near where the town’s railway station was located.

A railway service connected Cohuna and Leitchville to Bendigo from 1915 to 1977, with the last goods train using the line in 1978.

“All that’s left of the railway line is part of the former station platform behind Railway Avenue and the bridge towards Leitchville,” local councillor, Lorraine Learmonth said.

Cr Learmonth approached the historical society regarding developing signage to recognise the town’s railway history after people questioned if the town had a railway line or station.

“If people come into the town and ask about the town’s railway history, we can say there is a marker recognising this,” historical society treasurer, June Bagg said.

“The sign is similar to the one recognising Major Mitchell’s expedition, located at Gilrule Park, and we hope to develop similar signs at other historical sites at Mead and Gannawarra,” historical society secretary, Yvonne Church said.

The Cohuna Men’s Shed also helped out with the project by installing the sign and constructing a seat located nearby.

Around 300 trees have been planted in the area as part of efforts to rejuvenate the Cohuna Railway Walking Track.
