Crucifixion unites local Christians

CHRISTIANS have united in Kerang to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ.

The recently revamped Victoria Square area in the heart of the shopping centre was transformed into an ecumenical place of worship on Good Friday.

About 100 people gathered for Biblical readings, prayers and hymns before splitting into groups to walk along Victoria Street to reflect on Christ’s journey to his crucifixion by reflecting and reading at Stations of the Cross on shop windows.

Pastor Russell Drowley said that it was appropriate that local Christians had gathered in the shopping centre – a meeting place where people had no labels.

“I urge you all to cast off your [home church] labels and be as one with each one of us,” he said.

“This is the most important day in the history of the world.”

The Stations of the Cross involves a series of prayers associated with a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion.

The object of the stations is to help the Christian faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ.

A series of 14 images were erected on shop windows and the people walked from image to image, in order, stopping at each station to say the selected prayers and reflections.

The stations depicted the prefect of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate condemning Jesus to die; Jesus accepting his cross; falling for the first time; Jesus meeting his mother, Mary; Simon helping carry the cross; Veronica wiping the face of Jesus; Jesus falling for the second time; meeting the women of Jerusalem; falling for the third time; Jesus being stripped of his clothes; being nailed to the cross; dying; being taken down from the cross and being placed in the tomb.

Christians gathered in more joyous circumstances on Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the belief that humans will also be resurrected when they die.
