MORE than 80 people converged on Cohuna at the weekend to unlock the district’s many attractions.
Quirky cattle, sumptuous food, farm attractions and a good dose of nature all featured in the Keys to Cohuna challenge.
Visitors and locals alike joined in the fun, choosing from a selection of 10 challenges, with successful completion of six earning the recipient their own key to Cohuna.
The challenge was inspired by The Big Cohuna visit by ABC Triple J radio presenters Veronica and Lewis, who embraced challenges selected by Gannawarra mayor, Cr Brian Gibson during a visit to the town last year after stating on air that they would do anything to be given the keys to a city.
The radio duo chose Cohuna after district resident Tahlia Ellery nominated the town.
Three days of activities opened with a sell-out Friday Night Chill at local eatery, Factory and Field, followed by the Keys to Cohuna launch on Saturday and Market on the Move at five properties and the Cohuna Art Gallery.
Some brave souls braved a dip in the Gunbower Creek on cool mornings during the weekend, while others enjoyed locally grown eggs at two local cafes.
An easy challenge was taking a selfie in front of a purple kangaroo – the logo on the clubrooms of the Cohuna Kangas football team – and another was photographing a cow.
Other challenges involved a viewing of the Murray Explored bioscan video, finding an indigenous scar tree at Spences Bridge and setting out for a paddle on the creek.
Visitors also tracked down Lyndsey Quinlan’s alley-way Legendairy artwork and, for those with an appetite, local parmas were on offer.
Cohuna Progress Association president, Jason Hensley said that it was an excellent response to a new initiative.
“It was great that people took the time to explore what’s in our own back yard,” he said.
“I know some people went out with their kids and some locals went where they they don’t normally visit.”
Mr Hensley said that the Market on the Move concept had also attracted a good response.
