DEFENDING Golden Rivers Football Netball League premiers, Wandella has received an insight into what it takes to be one of the Australian Football League’s top key position players.
Two-time Essendon premiership player, Dustin Fletcher oversaw training on Tuesday night, before speaking about his career.
Recognised as one of the competition’s top defenders during this century and the late 1990s, the 42-year-old is one of four Victorian Football League/Australian Football League players to take part in at least 400 senior matches.
“It’s good to get back to the country,” he said.
“I’ve been to Kerang a few times, but this is my first time out here (to Wandella).”
Although last taking to the field in 2015, Fletcher is still involved with the Bombers, thanks to an ambassadorial role and assisting with the club’s academies.
He also runs a football program at Essendon Grammar, where he began his football career before being drafted to the Bombers prior to the start of the 1993 season.
“If there’s one or two kids who keep going with their footy and see that you can get to Melbourne and have a career out of it,” he said.
“I enjoy any moment I have to have a kick with the kids. It’s fantastic.”
