CMFNL – Mixed results

IT was a weekend of mixed results for the district’s Central Murray Football Netball League sides.

The Cohuna Kangas and Mallee Eagles were the only two local sides to record wins during the opening weekend of the season.

The Kangas led at every change in the club’s seven-point win against Lake Boga.

Accurate kicking in front of goal helped the eventual victors, with the Kangas booting eight goals from 13 scoring shots compared to the Magpies’ six majors from 16 shots.

Kangas coach, Scott Beattie booted three goals for the victors, with Joel Helman and Clayton Holmes best on ground for the visitors.

Meanwhile, the Eagles sent out a warning to the competition thanks to an 80-point win against Nyah-Nyah West United.

The Eagles took control of the match in the second half, kicking 14 goals to four after the main break.

Caine Hillier, Ethan Pinchen and Sean Bedggood kicked three goals each for the victors, with Braidon Bennett named best on ground.

Koondrook/Barham fell four points shy of also recording an opening round win, going down to Tooleybuc/Manangatang.

Despite leading by 12 points at half-time, the Raiders struggled in the second half as the hosts took control of the match.

Patrick Goble and Cameron Arnold – who finished with four majors in his debut game for the club – helped close the margin to less than a goal with one minute remaining in the game.

Phil Smith (two goals) and Goble were best on ground for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Kerang and Balranald shared the points after the round one match across the border was abandoned following the collapse of Blues reserves player, Patrick Featonby.
