BY the end of today, students at three local schools will have experienced what it is like to be on a Royal Flying Doctors Service aircraft.
The service’s Look! Up in the Sky education program spent time at Kerang South Primary School on Tuesday and Kerang Primary School yesterday, before heading to Murrabit Group School today.
Students at the three schools had the chance to explore the service’s aeromedical simulator – a full-scale replica of the service’s fleet, minus wings and a tail.
The interior matches aircraft used for the service – including medical equipment – with the program developed to teach children about the service and its history.
“It really helps that the program has the support of the teachers at each school we go to, as we see the initiative as an educational program rather than a promotional program,” educational program manager, Tom Ryan said.
The visit had added significance for Mr Ryan, who is a past Kerang South Primary School student.
The former resident spent his first two years of primary school in the town before his family moved.
“I pulled up at my hotel on Monday night and without having to use a GPS, was able to walk to my old home, and then the school,” he said.
“The school has not changed at all since I was a student. I was even able to find my old classroom pretty easily.”
