Ladies comp a wash-out

Cohuna Golf

THE ladies comp was a wash-out last week, but will be on again this week commencing at 10 am. The following week (10th) we hold the Christmas luncheon at the Farmercy for all lady members past and present, plus mid-week pennant players of either gender. This will follow the final of the club singles. Thanks to Val and Ruff Farrant the festive air extended to the club-house with the magnificent decorations all in place. Wednesday night bowlers enjoyed a beautiful evening, with Doug Peace, Lee Sutherland and Geoff Hall the clear trophy winners. Ron Farrant’s side scores duty next week, with the reminder that Lee and Max’s Christmas breakup will be held this year on December 11th. The ladder to this stage sees D.Mathers 21, R.McLoughlan 20, M.Appleby 18, B.Barry 18, D.Peace 17, M.Simmonds 15, R.Farrant 14, G.Bowles 10, S.Whittaker 8. A pretty even event at this stage, with a lot hingeing on who has the most regular attendees. On Saturday we had both greens full of pennant players, a terrific sight in these days of declining numbers. Results weren’t quite as pleasing, with a 50% success rate a bit down on expectations. Division One hosted Cohuna, but couldn’t quite bridge the gap established by two losses. A stitched up Bluey Fletcher lost by three to Brian Bowles, whilst John Keely failed by eleven against Jeff Reade. Jarred Hammond and team did well to win by twelve, to fall short overall by just two shots. Kerang this week in what will be a real test. Navy had a result straight from “Believe It Or Not” winning only one rink, yet defeating Cohuna by seven. Kerry Ballard had a massive 39-13 victory, which covered big losses by both a ham-strung Gary Easton and Doug Peace, both of whom fortunately recovered ground late in the day to close the required gap. Off to ladder leaders Kerang this week in another good tussle. The Whites played top-dogs Kerang, and showed enough to be positive about results in coming weeks. Bruce Morrison came back from ground zero to win by one against Tim Chalmers, whilst Peter Bibby toppled Ed Fenton by half a dozen. Yvonne could win only nine ends against Meggs Holloway, down by fifteen, but can only improve on that. Division Three took to the track, many thanks to recruiter Tucker, and new faces in Turtle Behrens and Liam Treacy, culminating in a hard fought victory over Barham Sports. Tucker a great come-back to lose by one, Barry Douglass home by four and Anne Hipwell up by five. The Bower vouchers for this week go to Anne, Irene Trezise, Deanne Ladson and Alan Westblade. Russ Ladson faces pretty severe surgery this week and the club’s best wishes are extended his way. On the home front thanks to our great band of helpers both greens were groomed out last week, along with a pile of maintenance tasks in preparation for our classic fours and other ongoing events. Another shirt order is being collated, requirements to Yvonne, especially should they be long-sleeved. Sunday lunch-time saw a happy gathering of members at the Gunbower hotel for a pre-Christmas get-to-gether, and to acknowledge McGillivray’s valued sponsorship. A great time had by all, although a little early for too much socializing for some. A report on Monday night’s ham tournament next week.
