Mixed results for Cohuna

Cohuna

Mixed results for Cohuna, with two losses and one win

Cohuna played Barham Services and went down by five shots overall.

Brian Bowles was the only one who greeted the judge, winning by seven shots over B. Bowlton, picking up a seven on the second end.

Jeff Reade lowered his colours for the first time this year, going down by four shots against S. Manners. They were chasing the dogs tail all day.

Secretary Peter VanderZande is going through a lean time at the moment, going down by eight shots to Chris Hope.

Division Two played Pyramid Hill and won by 25 shots, with two rinks up and one down.

Wally Henery’s side must have got no presents under the Christmas tree as they were all fired up to defeat Ian Bartels by 28 shots. Not 38 shots shown on the score card.

Frank Bagg returning back as Skipper after a wedding (Frank you should be loyal to your club not attending weddings) defeated L. Mann by 11 shots with all of his team playing good bowls.

Dianne Manners also going through a lean period going down by 14 shots to Marie Scott.

Division Three played against Gunbower, with Division One bowlers helping out to fill the gaps who went to the races, won by 34 shots with no rinks greeting the judge.

Norm Bath at the last minute was thrown in to skipper against the improved Glen Miller, winning 12 ends but was in arrears by 11 shots.

Marge Mooney was against a side who would win games higher up, against C. Moscrove by 18 shots. Although outplayed, she was still was trying to the last end.

Trevor, not Tom Allen, played against Mal Hogan, going down by five shots, however in front on the 22nd end to do a lazy four, ruined our chances of winning.

Just looking through the cards, Wally Henery did a seven later in the game. I heard one bowler was trying to get shot on the next rink.

Social scene next Friday will be no tea. Marg Gruar wasn’t there on Friday night when her name came up, costing her $150.

Cohuna Golf

Amid another hectic week of bowls, we paused to bid farewell to longtime member and Super-Veteran, Col Thorson.

Colin not only played bowls, he served for many years as an assistant greenkeeper, and his sense of humour was legendary.

Well done to those club members who combined to make Col’s final presence in our clubhouse a fitting send off.

Our last tournament for the year, the sought after hams kindly provided by Rodwells, went Leitchville’s way, with Roy Dehne coming in with the leading points tally, ahead of Michael Carmody’s local team, plus brother Ted.

Our first event in the new year is a twilight triples on Monday, January 13. It should be easy to hunt up teams of three.

On Tuesday, the ladies singles final was played, and what a memorable match it was.

Rhonda Bibby skipped away to a substantial early lead, then was caught up by Yvonne Eckhardt as they both entered the twenties.

After another five gripping ends, Yvonne triumphed 25-23 to collect another club title. Well done to both ladies.

The pick-up saw Linda McManus, Val Farrant, Shirley Whittaker and June Richardson snare the trophies, after which all adjourned to the Farmercy for an excellent Christmas lunch.

This competition resumes on January 14, with a pick-up and the final of the club pairs.

Our Wednesday night bowlers also had their wind up, with Doug Peace, Lee Sutherland and Geoff Hall triumphant.

Lee and Max provided a top supper, while Len Mathers scooped the pool in the dressup stakes. He must have a cupboard full of things that flash, rattle and glitter. This group resumes on January 8.

Fifty-five and over had their last game for 2019 at Sports. In trying conditions, three sides only remained unbeaten.

Kerang Golf did well to register five in the yard stick, with our boys skipped by Ross Bateman coming second with a closer shot than Pyramid. This comp resumes at Barham on January 9.

The men’s singles has now reached the grand final stage after matches on Friday.

John Keely was too consistent for Craig Whittaker, while after an early challenge, Jarred Hammond steadied to defeat Frank Trezise. The final is set for December 22 at 1.30pm, and will be worth attending.

Pennant results were mixed, with the Division Ones falling over the line, just two shots up on Barham Sports, thanks to the single rink winner in Jarred Hammond.

Jarred had just enough shots to cover losses by John Keely and Bluey Fletcher. The clash with Leitchville this week will be all important going into the break.

Navy travelled to Kerang Golf, where only Ron Eckhardt could snare points.

He rolled Marlene Orr by twelve, not enough sadly to cover the other two losses by one and seventeen, in a near replica of the Division One results.

Bower vouchers to Ron, Garry Farrant, Ross Bateman and Alan Dunne.

The Whites met Leitchville, where scores were tight all day in two games.

Yvonne eventually prevailed by two, and Des Easton down by one.

Peter Bibby’s rink continued their good form to win by nineteen and consolidate the victory.

An excited group in Division Three cracked another victory, this time at Kerang White’s expense.

Anne up by seven and Snow ahead by three, more than enough to cover Tucker’s loss by seven.

With a bye in Division Two, players should be aplenty this week.

Due to the predicted heat on Friday, the proposed barbecue has been postponed until the New Year.

Club members and the community of Leitchville enjoyed Saturday evening, who were invited to the Leitchville Bowls Club to come and view the upgrades to the club facilities of shading (blinds and shadecloth area) and lino and carpet in the clubhouse.

The upgrades were funded by grants from Gannawarra Shire Council and the Sport Australia Community Sport Infrastructure Grant.

Thanks to Yvonne Church for her assistance in helping to obtain these grants.

Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh, was in attendance and congratulated the Leitchville Bowls Club on obtaining these grants.

He was very impressed of the improvements done to the club.

An apology was received by Gannawarra Shire Council mayor, Lorraine Learmonth, who was unable to attend.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year.
