Kerang Golf

THE last round of Saturday Pennant with Division 1 and Division 3 playing at home.

The Division 1 team had a successful day with wins on all rinks against Leitchville and a 62/46 scoreline. The best performed rink and winner of the Royal Hotel vouchers were Andy Jeffs, Graeme Hayes, Brett Hipworth and Alan Hird with a 7 shot win. Howard McClelland was up by 5 and Frank Ritchie was 4 shots in front at the completion.

Division 3 had a bad day against top team Barham 4, with all rinks beaten. Final scores were 97/33. This team will have to regroup for their next assignment in the 1st Semi-Final next Saturday at Wakool against Kerang 4. Players and members are reminded that there will be a bus going to Wakool for the final. Please advise if you are coming to support, on the list on the noticeboard.

Division 2 travelled to Barham to tackle Barham 3 and a close match ensued. For Golf, Ronnie McKerrow was the only winner, by 2 shots, with Laurie Gray down by one and Andrew Charles down by 4, for an overall loss by 3 shots, 55/52.

The season for Division 2 has been a series of close games, with 6 games being decided by 7 shots or less, and unfortunately none were in Golf’s favour.

Midweek had a big win against Leitchville, with Lorraine Ritchie’s team winning by 22 shots and Joyce Tuohey’s team winning by 23. A resounding 58 to 13 shot win and now off to the 1st semi-final against Cohuna Golf 2 tomorrow at Cohuna. Team is Joyce Tuohey (Skip), Mick Pors, Sonia McLeish and Allison Medson, with Team 2 Lorraine Ritchie (Skip), Judy McKerrow, Rosie Laughlin and Lorraine Douglass. Good luck to all team members.

Worthy of mention was the pairs game played during the week, between Joyce Tuohey and Lorraine Douglass against Marlene Orr and Carol Pay, with scores level on the last end and the winning shot being the last bowl of the contest with Marlene and Carol winning after Marlene moved the opposition’s very close shot bowl.

Our night at the Royal Hotel last Saturday, was enjoyed by all, with more than 30 attending. It was a great night for outdoor dining and as usual the hospitality of the Royal Hotel was second to none.

Barefoot Bowls last Wednesday evening was an enjoyable night for all who participated. Winners were the Royal Hotel team of Rob Fisher, Paul Saunders, Frank Boxshall and “secret” weapon, Robert Jarman. They had two wins and 32 points to just win the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers by one point from the Taylor Ashton Painting team of Robert “Fonzy” Taylor, Rob Fabry, Wayne “Wheels” O’Neill and “Casey” Wilson. The “Encouragement” chocolates were won by The Band, with representatives, Stuart Robinson and Tim being present, but Andy Jeffs and Noel Congran were absent because of early work starts the following morning.

The ladder sees Hayes Real Estate on top with 84 points, followed by the Royal Hotel on 77, The Lloyds on 74 and Crackerjacks on 72. Still a few games to go and pressure mounts as to which team will win the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Shield for the premier team in Barefoot Bowls at Kerang Golf.

Thursday bowls was enjoyed by 14 members, as well as another four playing a pairs match. There were only two x two games winners and they were Trevor Linton and Howard McClelland. Runners-up were Rob Fisher and Noel Robertson with a win and a tie. The Encouragement award went to Frank Ritchie and Allison Medson.

Cohuna

Winners of our training teams this week were Kate, Rhonda, Peter and Ken. It was terrific to see so many turn up to train.

What a great result for our Midweek pennant teams. Two of our three teams finished the season on top of the ladder. Keep up the good work for the finals and best of luck.

Div 1 play Kerang and Div 2 play Kerang 2. This final will be played at Cohuna.

Saturday pennant saw some great results for our club. Div 1 10/66 d Kerang 2/63 in a very close game. This result leaves them in 2nd spot on the ladder with a double chance.

The Ones play Cohuna Golf at Golf, this should be a very exciting match.

Div 2 12/84 d Kerang 0/42, then had to wait for other results to see the outcome. How exciting to fall over the line and still be alive for next week.

We will play Barham 3 on Saturday and this is a must win for us to continue. Best of luck to both teams in the finals.

No results for Div 2/3 who played Leitchville.

Div 3/4 0/52 lost to Kerang 3 12/84.

Pennant training Tuesday in preparation for Saturday. Hope to see as many as possible there.

All finals this weekend will be played at Cohuna Golf.

Don’t forget our Autumn Tournament is coming up, so get your entries in asap.

Cohuna Golf

HERE we are at the end of another pennant season, with finals now for the top sides in each division.

We are fortunate to have Division One and Golf Navy both competing, good luck one and all.

Results in the final round saw the Ones defeat Gunbower on all rinks, the slippery green making for an interesting day. Alongside, the Gunny Golfers battled hard against a Barham side, but were overwhelmed by match end. Thanks to Gunbower for the barbecue tea after the games, a great way to finish the day.

Our Twos played each other, and again the results showed how close they are to each in ability. Bruce Morrison’s rink continued its recent good form to win by eight, but with victories to Doug Peace (by six) and Jon Henty (by 4) the Navy team survived to begin their finals campaign.

Tuesday ladies played matches alongside the championship final. Yvonne triumphed here against Linda McManus in a very entertaining game. Winners on the day were Rhonda, Margot and Elizabeth.

Following was midweek pennant, with the Ones going down to Barham, but the Twos winning their game comfortably. Both play finals at Cohuna this Wednesday.

The Wednesday night competition continues to attract good fields, with Mal Appleby, Kim Hallinan and Neil Falconer scoring the night’s awards. Steve Henty’s team is down for duty this week.

The ladder after nine rounds is: G.Valentine 37, D.Turnour and K.Hocking 31, K. Currie 28, M.Appleby and P.Robinson 25, S.Henty 24, M.Simmonds and N.Simmonds both 21 and R.Farrant 19.

Players in Thursday’s jackpot pairs enjoyed the cooler conditions, with top dogs on the day being the Mike Henshaw- Barney McLoughlan combination, whilst John Prout and Peter Bibby snared the repecharge poultry. The jackpot number of minus 18 wasn’t claimed, so extends to $140 this week.

On Sunday over 90 past and present members enjoyed our first ever premiership reunion. The magnificent number of pennants won has never been acknowledged in total, and aided by a huge amount of documentation organised by John Brown, all could see who was involved and when.

Shinboner President Pat sourced past North Melbourne captain and current board member Anthony Stevens as our guest speaker, and with his insights into past and present football personalities the time passed quickly. He touched on his early life, Danii Laidley, Dennis Pagan and the mental pressures that AFL players are subjected too, before a question and answer segment.

In all great precedent for the club, further confirming its place as a leader in bowls innovation in the northern area.

Leitchville

OUR last pennant game for the year was not a happy one as all sides in Division 1 and 2, we went down to a better opposition.

The year turned out to be very disappointing for all grades in the club. Next year we need to change that around somehow and we can start by attending a special meeting of all members on Tuesda, February 15, 7.30pm at the clubhouse.

Social bowls will continue for another two weeks, with the last week being a fancy dress night, Hillbillies will be the theme. We have had great support by the social group, it would be nice to see our club continue to support them.

The Club Championship Men’s Fours will be played on Tuesday, February 22 at 5.30pm, entries close Tuesday, February 22 at 5.15pm.

Championship results:

Singles – Kevin Dehne defeated Ken Dehne.

Pairs – Kevin Dehne /Tony Cantwell defeated Sam and Peter Griffiths.

Congratulations to all.

Dates to remember:

Special meeting Tuesday, February 15 at 7.30pm

Social bowls Wednesday, February 16 at 6.30pm.

Go Swamp Rats.
