Bowls notes May 17

Kerang Golf

THURSDAY’S social bowls was rained out and we had to wait until Sunday for the sun to shine for one of our regular day of bowls at Kerang Golf.

There were 14 players and a mixture of pairs and triples played two games of 10 ends. The greens were running beautifully after a roll in the morning.

At the conclusion, there was only one combination who won both games. A team led by Noel Robertson, consisting of Allison Medson and Howard McClelland, won both games by 5 shots and collected the cash prizes.

Noel was heard to tell all that it was his leadership that set the wins up. The runners up were Mick Pors and Sonia McLeish who had a win and a draw to be the recipients of the Mars and Snickers Bars for second place.

At the other end, Gary Borg, “Fonzy” Taylor and Rob Malseed received the encouragement award chocolates. It was noted that the current club champion had a bowl that deviated left, instead of right, much to the amusement of his opponents and teammates.

All bowlers are welcome to attend social bowls days on Thursday and Sunday at Kerang Golf. Registration is 12.45pm for a 1pm start on both days. You only have to turn up to be part of it – see you there.

Kerang

BLACK Duck Jackpot 2 Bowl Triples played on Tuesday, May10 saw 30 bowlers play in good conditions.

Two game winners were L. Hein, P. Waters and B. McCleish on +12. Second game winners were J. McCleish, R. Maddox and A. Davies on +6.

Jackpot number drawn was -5. Not claimed. Jackpot next week goes up to $222.

To play Black Duck call the club on 5452 1194 by 11am for a 12.30pm start, or, preferably, have your name down on the list on the notice board by the day before.

If you want to play pennant, either Saturday or Wednesday, or both, the club needs to know so we can apply for the suitable number of teams to the Northern District Committee. There are forms you can fill out at the club rooms then pin it with the others on the notice board.

Cohuna Golf

DESPITE a two-month break between the completion of local bowls pennant, and this weekend’s state finals, the squad at Cohuna Golf are looking forward to their next challenge with anticipation.

They meet a section comprising half of the other regional winners from across the state, at the Moama complex, beginning on Saturday morning at 8.30am. Their first match is against Yarrawonga, (Ovens and Murray) then follows Newborough (Gippsland) and South Bendigo (Central Goldfields). On Sunday they complete the section with matches against Lakes Entrance and Warracknabeal.

The two sectional winners then play off on Sunday afternoon for the state title.

Bowls Victoria subsidises all player accommodation, and hosts a dinner at the Moama Bowling Club on the Saturday night, making this event memorable for all participants.

With matches alternating between the synthetic and grass surfaces conditions are bound to be a test for all competitors, but will add another dimension to the challenge.

For a club with less than 50 male members, Cohuna Golf has put together a remarkable success record over many seasons, and it will be no surprise to see them claim a scalp or two at state level.
