KERANG GOLF

A BEAUTIFUL autumn day was the catalyst for a good crowd of bowlers for the regular Thursday bowls at Kerang Golf.

After the regulatory two games, played in brilliant sunshine, the single pairing in the group ran out winners with 14 shots up separating them from the other two game winner.

Well done to Laurie Gray and Noel Robertson. This is back to back wins for Noel. The runners up were Carol Pay, Rob Fisher and Bryce McLeish with 6 shots up.

The “encouragement” chocolates were won by Mick Pors, Sonya McLeish and Joycey Tuohey. A “special” award went to Rob “Curly” Curtis, Rob Malseed and Greg Tate (who had his first day with us).

On Sunday, again in warm autumn sunshine again, another friendly group played two games of 10 ends. With two wins and 14 shots up, Laurie Gray and Howard McClelland were the winners and a trio of Rob Malseed, Peter “Ted Bear” Murray and Joyce Tuohey, also won both games, but only 3 shots up, so had to settle for the runners up prize.

The coveted “encouragement” award chocolates were won by Allison Medson and Rob “Curly” Curtis.

It was noticed that some of the regular bowlers were supporting the Ambrose golf event also held Sunday afternoon. With an interested spectator group (bowlers), the “Fonzy”, Noel and “Wheels” team hit off the 9th tee, with not a lot of success – looks like back to bowls next week.

Thank you to the volunteers who prepare the greens at this time of the year, with games now being played “east-west” on the Westland Green, the surface was excellent and the new lines were “stand-outs” – thanks Laurie and Ken.

Social bowls will continue on Thursdays and Sundays with a 12.45pm register and 1pm bowl. This scribe will be taking a break for the winter, heading north to seek out the warmer weather and maybe a game of bowls. Thanks to the Gannawarra Times and staff for their assistance in getting these notes in the local paper.

KERANG

BLACK Duck Jackpot 2 Bowl Triples played on Tuesday, May 17, with 30 bowlers played in cool conditions.

Two-game winners were I. Roberts, B. Theobald and G. Tate on +27. Second Game winners were M. Orr, R. McBain and C. Pay on +11.

Jackpot number drawn was -10. $222 won by K. Strachan, R. Maddox and A. Marshall. Jackpot next week goes back to $66

To play Black Duck call the club on 5452 1194 by 11am for a 12.30pm start, or, preferably, have your name down on the list on the notice board by the day before.

If you want to play pennant, either Saturday or Wednesday, or both, the club needs to know so we can apply for the suitable number of teams to the Northern District committee. There are forms you can fill out at the club rooms then pin it with the others on the notice board.

Congratulations to Kane Wilson for making the State U18 Squad.

A wonderful achievement and the whole club is proud of him. Well done to Kane and his parents who have been very supportive on his bowls journey.

COHUNA GOLF

THE weather gods finally smiled on us, enabling the hosting of our Thursday pie and soup tournament.

Eighteen sides attended, run as a memorial to Russell McLoughlan, a keen social bowler who passed away tragically pre-covid.

Five sides won all three games, nearly a record, with only one point separating them.

Winners on shots up were Peter Bibby, Russ Ladson and Mary Rodwell, with runners up being Bluey Fletcher, Pat Quinn and Cheryle Baker. The lucky loser was the Col Barton side. Brian McLoughlan presented an inscribed memento to each of the winners on behalf of the family, a touching gesture.

A little earlier president Tucker Peace, assisted by life member John Brown, called Russ Ladson forward to induct him into the ranks of super-veteran bowlers. Russ has been a valued member for many years, playing in four division two premiership. As evidenced by the previous result Russ is still a very handy bowler, with Tucker wishing him well continuing in the sport.

It was then on to Moama for the state pennant championships, which has been so eagerly anticipated these past weeks. After a practice session on Friday afternoon, and a bonding meal together with players and partners, we were ready for Saturday’s action.

The golf team provided the first upset of the tournament, defeating the highly rated Yarrawonga-Mulwala side in round one. With skipper Jarred Hammond unable to attend due to COVID, fellow skipper Harrison Keely, a round one big winner, then left our ranks with a nasty bout of gastro.

All rinks battled on manfully, with narrow losses to Newborough and South Bendigo, whilst managing a great win against Warracknabeal on day two. A great performance was turned in by the Keely/Barton rink which lost just the one game over two days.

The event was a great bonding experience, enhanced by the huge number of supporters who came over for a look, and also Irene Trezise who handled all the managerial tasks so well.
