Across the Greens

Cohuna

IT was great to see a big attendance at the club’s first Jackpot Pairs for the season, with valued members from Cohuna and Gunbower supporting the event.

Winners on the day were Craig Whittaker and Julie Henshaw, while Jon Henty and Jean Sutherland snared the repechage poultry. The jackpot number drawn was -6. A couple of entries were close, but no cigar, so any winner will be looking at $30 this week. Any new entrants should get in early to facilitate the draw. Thanks to Phil for the greens, and the ladies responsible for the bonus catering.

Coming up are a couple of state events for anyone interested, being the 60 and over pairs, Pyramid Hill the venue, also the singles for the same age group to be held at Cohuna. Enter through Yvonne if you fancy yourself. Two sides of hopefuls journeyed to Deniliquin for their Premier Fours competition, but found that not all clubs have greens as free running as we enjoy. Nevertheless, a great weekend of bowls and social fun was enjoyed by all.

Cohuna are holding their opening this weekend, single names to be forwarded, while our opening is September 11. It’s a Mixed Fours tournament and teams’ or single entries should go to Cheryle or Peter. The following weekend we host Cohuna in a pennant-style practice game. Names to Pat Quinn will assure entrants a berth.Kerang

THE Kerang Bowling Club held it 59th Annual Spring Carnival, which was a great success. The weather was pleasant with sunny patches but a short break had to be taken while a shower passed through during Monday’s play.

There were more than 25 different clubs represented, with players travelling from as far as Melbourne, Ballarat, Horsham, Swan Hill, Moulamein, Echuca, Bendigo and Yarrawonga. The Kerang Bowls Club appreciates the support that it received from all the visiting bowlers and hopes they will return to play in future events.

Saturday’s event was an Any Combination Medley Pairs contest and with 84 players entered all three greens were filled. This would have been the first time for many years that an event at this tournament had a capacity field.

On Sunday, 84 players played in an Any Combination Two-Bowl Triples event. The event comprised five games of six ends, which is an unusual format but was well received by all the bowlers.

Monday’s event was again Any Combination Two-Bowl Triples, but this time some of the playing conditions used in the BPL were introduced and, while the day was a great success and well received, it was found that some of the playing conditions need to be revised for next year.

Saturday A/C Medley Pairs

Six teams won three games each.

Winners: Gary McCaig and Peter Brook, Murray Downs, 81 points.

Runners-up: Ian Coates, Cohuna Golf, and Mike Hoffman, Cohuna, 80 points

Sunday A/C 2 Bowl Triples

Two teams won five games each.

Winners: Frank Ryan, Rick Ainsworth and Jean Fairchild, Wakool, 29 points.

Runners-up: Steve Sargent and Rob Tarrant, Strathmore, and Jim Garnham, Korumburra, 18 points.

Rod Wickham’s team from Lake Boga had four wins and a tie.

Monday A/C 2 Bowl triples

Three teams won three games.

Winners: Gary McCaig, Ray Wilson and Brian Lehman, Murray Downs, 26 points.

Runners-up: Trevor Pocock, Barry Theobald and Don Monaghan, Kerang, 23 points.

Pam Dodman’s team from Yarrawonga scored 21 points.

Tuesday was the final day of the carnival, with 36 players playing the normal Black Duck event in very cool but sunny conditions.

The two-game winners were: Adrian McCormack Buckley Park, George Fenton and Peter Basile with plus 24 shots, a very good score on the day.

The winners of the highest score in the second game were: Alyne Fagg, Hein Bos and Peter Waters, Boort, with +8 shots.

The jackpot number drawn out was +6 and as no team had that score the jackpot rises to $288 next week.

Members are reminded that the AGM of the Kerang Bowling Club board is on Wednesday, September 14, at 7pm in the clubhouse.

There are a number of tournaments in the area coming up and members are asked to attend as many as they can as we receive great support from surrounding clubs.
