Cohuna Golf

A PLEASANT day greeted the club’s ladies on Tuesday, with new member Julie being welcomed into our ranks. Yvonne will have to put on a handicap as she teamed with Helen, Irene and Moss to again snag the day’s awards. Two in a row is quite enough.

It was shirt sleeves too on Thursday for our pairs, with a good field enjoying a very speedy green. Best of the two-game winners were John Pearson and Cheryle Baker, taking the day’s top honours, with the consolation poultry to Pat Quinn and Phil McManus, who won their second game by 13. Plus 39 was drawn as the jackpot number – miles too big – so we line up for $60 this Thursday. Thanks Rhonda for the toasties, which were a nice finish to the day.

Sadly our traditional practice match against Echuca couldn’t go ahead due to lack of numbers, so on Sunday all members are invited to join a practice match day at the club, with names in or attendance by 12.30pm for a 1pm start. The social club is running a sausage sizzle afterwards to wind up the day and lead into the Pennant season, which starts with midweek play on October 5.

Look out for the dodgers with the details for a couple of star days in the offing, Wakool and Barham from memory. Don’t leave our attendance to the same volunteers each time.

The jackpot number drawn, +14, was not claimed. Next week’s jackpot is $96.

IT was a beautiful sunny day for social bowls on Thursday, with 24 players in attendance. Three bowl triples were played on the Alec Mitchell green. Most expected the green to bit a bit heavy after the rain, but it bowled with its normal draw and pace. There were two combinations that won both their games and both finished with 20 shots up.

However, the 11-shot win in the second game separated the winners from the runners-up. Frank Ritchie, Greg Tate and jeff Anderson were the recipients of the major prize, with Laurie Gray, Rosie Laughlin and Don Monaghan settling for second place. No doubt about the chocolates though, with Gary Borg, Kevin Chase and Rob Malseed happily accepting their Mars bars.

Congratulations go to Allison Medson, who won the Northern District Playing Area Novice Singles at Cohuna, also played last Thursday. Allison has only recently taken up bowls and has improved immensely in a very short time. Her dedication to practice has paid dividends and there will be more success in the future

Last Friday, we played our annual practice match against Lake Boga. For the first time in five years, the Kerang Golf team won a very close contest with each club having four wins and a tie. The golf team scored 186 shots to the home side’s 178.

Lake Boga president Ken Hammill reluctantly handed the shield to Kerang Golf’s president Gary Borg, but congratulated the winning team as well. Best performed rink for Kerang Golf was that of Ronnie McKerrow, Jeff Anderson, Trevor Linton and Sonia McLeish. Other winning skippers were Laurie Gray, Gary Borg, Judy McKerrow and Frank Boxshall’s team played a tie.

If chocolates were presented (they weren’t), they would probably have gone to the retired panel beater’s team. A great day for both clubs, thanks to Lake Boga for their hospitality, and a great hit-out with the Pennant season only two weeks away.

The Sunday social had their last outing with 21 players participating. Congratulations to the Geelong team and supporters on their premiership. Bowls winners were Frank Ritchie, Allison Medson and Jim Richards with two wins and 24 shots up.

Runners-up were Noel Robertson (better than Friday) Robertson and Rob Malseed, also two wins, but only eight shots up. The “sought after” chocolates to Joyce Tuohey and John Duckworth. Social bowls will now revert to Thursdays only, with the Pennant season commencing. Thank you to all those members and visitors who have supported the Sunday bowls over the football season.

Our Captains versus Presidents Day will be held this coming Saturday. Teams will be selected to represent each both team leaders, so if you are not available, please let Jimmy, Noel or Aldo know ASAP. The captain’s team won last year, so president Gary will be keen to reverse that result this year. Teams will be sent out to all members after the selections are made. It is a club uniform day, as Pennant starts the following week.

Royal Night – Thanks very much to Rob Fisher and the Royal Hotel for your continued support of Kerang Golf Bowls. Our first night out will be in late October or early November – watch this space.

Pennant starts on Wednesday, October 5, for the midweek team and the following Saturday for the weekend Pennant matches.
