Cohuna

THERE was another great roll-up on Tuesday with more than 30 players. There were three two-game winners.

The lucky team after a countback was Marg Reade, Marg Main and Richard Flinders.

There was no Midweek Pennant again last week due to weather – maybe this week?

Friday night was again a huge success and we welcomed John from the caravan park. A big thank-you to those who donated the sausages, salads and sweets, then waited on us. The club really appreciates the generosity of these members. Rodney Bannister was pleased to take home the meat tray donated by the Cohuna Butchers.

Pennant was a mixed bag this week. The selectors did a great job filling teams again despite many absentees. Hopefully this will settle soon.

Division 1 12/69 d Wakool 0/48, Division 2 2/49 lost Kerang to 2 10/60, Division 3A 2/43 lost to Wakool 10/58 and Division 3B 8/63 d Barham 5 4/54.

Our thoughts go out to all those facing floodwaters and we wish them well. Stay safe.

Hope to see you all Tuesday. Names should be in by 12.15 for 1pm start.

Cohuna Golf

OUR ladies had a fine day finally for their Tuesday bowls, and a good turnout was the result. Winners on the day were Rhonda, Jean and Noelene who deated Julie’s side, chocolates to boiled lollies in a week for our new member.

There was till no Midweek Pennant and things look pretty precarious again for this Wednesday. We might have to decide this year’s Wednesday Pennant winner on the toss of a coin.

Saturday bowls went ahead with players strengthened by a great meal on Friday night. Thanks to all who contributed to the evening, enjoyed by all present.

Division 1 hosted Barham, and were tested for three parts of the day. Although Harrison couldn’t close his dicit on Brody Harker, both Jarred and Bluey sailed away over the final few ends to win by eleven and nine respectively. Garry Easton earned a special mention for an exemplary display of leading for the Fletcher rink.

Also at home were the Navy combination, who had Pyramid Hill to contend with. Mike Henshaw’s rink swept all before them, up by 20, aided by Jeff Holloway home by one in a thriller. Doug Peace and team made up tons of ground on Lionel Mann to miss out by just four, the net result being a 17-shot win overall.

The White contingent went across to Barham in a serious mood, having travelled over midweek for a practice run. It must have done them good, with all rinks winning. The Bower vouchers went to Colin Black (a great debut, Col), Phil McManus, Rhonda Bibby and Des Keely, whose winning margin was 14.

After a promising display last week the Gunny Golfers hit a hurdle in the form of a Barham side, with all rinks lowering their colours. Some excuses can be offered as they bear the brunt of withdrawals higher up the list, so an improved showing is anticipated this week, when they play a Kerang side.

On Sunday we hosted the preliminary rounds of the State Singles qualifiers, with a good field of men, but only four ladies. The two Barham players, Jean and Jenny played off, with Jenny Laursen coming up trumps after a tight game, the margin just one shot.

In the men’s event, after two rounds, the field was reduced to four, with Brody Harker (Barham) playing Mark Harmon (Kerang), with Frank Tonn (Cohuna) meeting Ian Main (Wakool). Frank and Brody won through, and decided to finish the event on the day. In the final game Brody prevailed over a gallant Frank to represent our association at district level. Thanks to greens staff, markers and caterers who presented the facility in wonderful fashion.

For those wondering where our teams are, the selectors have wisely decided to allow more time over their procrastinations, the result being teams will be displayed later in the week at the venues down the street, and also on our team app. Word will spread quickly enough.

Finally, a few thoughts for our members, and those from fellow clubs who are experiencing the trauma of floodwater. Bowls become insignificant when confronted with loss of housing, employment or property. Here’s hoping the predicted outcomes are far less severe than we see further south, and all can rejoin our sport at the earliest opportunity.

Kerang Golf

THE weather is still the most concerning news on everyone’s minds, with floods and very high river levels in many places and still coming to others. The midweekers were again cancelled because of the inclement weather, so a start will hopefully happen tomorrow.

However, the weather gods took pity on the Saturday bowlers, with the second round being completed in cool, dry conditions, after most towns recorded nearly 100mm of rain during the week. Congratulations to all the staff and volunteers at our clubs who made the playing conditions exceptional after the deluge during the week. Our Division 1 team headed to Gunbower, and returned as winners with two rinks winning and a 13-shot overall result. Howard McClelland’s team led the way with an 18-shot win and Lloyd Murray was an 11-shot winner, Jim McLeish, in his first day skipping in Division 1 was short 16 shots at the finish.

Division 2 and 3 played at home against Barham 2 and Kerang 4 respectively. In Division 2, Ronnie McKerrow was a big winner by 17 shots. Jeff Anderson, down by 11, and Gary Borg had a bad day scorewise. Overall, the team down by 17 shots.

Our Division 3 team hosted town rivals Kerang 4 and were a bit short-staffed with absentees in the higher divisions. However, there was a super performance from Rob Malseed’s rink of “Fonzy” Taylor, Mick Fisher and John Duckworth, winning 15 ends and by 18 shots, 25/7, carrying the team to a six-shot overall win.

This win was good enough to win the Royal Hotel vouchers as well, for this week. Well done to this team. Noel Robertson was down by six shots, as was Judy McKerrow.

The midweek team for this week, to play Cohuna Golf 2 at home, is Judy McKerrow, Joyce Tuohey, Rosie Laughlin and Lorraine Douglass, with team 2 being Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson. Players to arrive at 9am for a 9.30 start.

The ladies’ club championship draw is on the noticeboard and matches can now be played. Also, entries are being sought for the Peg Coad Triples Tournament on Thursday, October 27. Judy McKerrow (0427 638 717) is taking entries.

The men’s club championship singles entry sheet is on the board. Last day for entries will be Sunday, October 23, so get you names in this week. All other men’s event entry sheets are on the board as well. The Royal Hotel night is also looking for members interest. Saturday November 5 is the date, so please put your names on the sheet and come along and support our sponsor.

Our club was represented at the Quambatook tournament last week with the Stuart Robinson-led rink of Noel Robertson and Graeme Hayes, joined by Richard Murray, coming home with their pockets full after winning the Any Combination Fours Tournament. “Robbo” was ecstatic with the win and was quoted as the “form” player of the club, leading the combination to victory.

As these notes are being written, there is a meeting happening in Kerang with regard to the flood situation. It is a strong possibility that the Kerang town could be isolated in the not to distant future, so bowls may have to take a “back seat’’ until this event passes. Hopefully, everyone is safe and we can resume our bowls when things are back to normal. Our playing area administration will be on top of this and will make the common sense decisions when necessary.
